The Art of The Transition

What You Need to Know to Navigate the In-Between

I recently left my corporate job in the Midwest to set out to become a creative entrepreneur. It was a big decision, and my people supported in a big way. There were goodbye brunches that were tail ended by goodbye happy hours; “I’m so proud of you” cards and “I admire you so much” texts; popped bottles of champagne and toasts over shots of whiskey.

What can I say — my people do the most.

Two months later, I find myself very much “en route,” but far from my final destination. And as I traverse, I’ve realized that nobody is exactly sending over bottles of Veuve (or Korbel for that matter).

Transitions haven’t received their due respect. We acknowledge arrivals and departures; life and death; alpha and omega; going from A to Z.

Our minds seem to easily grasp that we need to have a beginning to have an end.

But boy oh boy have we missed the boat on acknowledging the steps along a path. And as a result, when we step into a significant transitional period of our lives, we are confronted with unexpected emotions.
